Being someone that grew up in a blended family and having one of my own, it's just never easy any way you slice it.

They do say that, as children get older, it becomes easier because they just refuse to go.

I've always thought of the split custody to be the perfect arrangement if it was an ideal set-up (parents in same town, nearby to common school, etc.)

But this gives me a completely different view and I respect and appreciate you being so honest about it.

Hey, I'm another Step-mom blogger. We have custody of my step-daughter. She's with her mom every other weekend. Although currently her mom is going through a rough patch with her other two kids' dad so my step-daughter isn't going over there as much until things calm down and her mom gets it all figured out.

Being a step-mom is definitely a tough job. Most of the responsibilities of parent...few of the benefits.

The 50/50 custody arrangement crosses my mind often. Once Eliza is released from prison, I am sure that she will try to obtain custody again. In the state we live in, who knows if the judge will grant her this? Eliza did murder someone AND she had them removed from her home a year prior to the crime for neglect, but you never know. Mothers, good, bad, or indifferent always seem to triumph.

Ethan will be 18 and Evan 16 when she is released-- if she gets all of the time cuts that she is eligible for. It makes me worry prematurely, but I do think about it often. I have invested a lot into the boys and I don't want to have them ripped away. Not to mention, our parenting philosophies are different than hers. I also feel that once she is released that the tides will turn as far as she and I trying to put our differences aside. At this point I just turn my worries over to God because it is truly not in our hands.

Thanks for sharing Natzgal. Before my husband and I inherited Ian and Imani he considered getting 50/50 custody of my step-daughter Kierra. My husband really wants Kierra to come live with us full-time. It would be very hard to prove that Kierra would be better off with us. BM is not a horrible mother. So like your husband we are, what we call, biding our time.
